A unique building to discover in Montbéliard !

An eventful history

The temple, located about 15 minutes from La Vieille Ferme, is a symbol of resilience. Although historical texts mention the existence of a Catholic church as early as 1343, it was not until 1601 that the construction of the building as we know it today began.

At that time, Montbéliard had already been a welcoming place for Protestants from all over the world for more than seventy years. The prince of the time, Frederick I, ordered the construction of the temple to provide a place of worship for all these arrivals.

Nevertheless, a few decades later, Montbéliard was conquered by Louis XIV during his numerous wars against the princes of the Holy Roman Empire. Fervent opponent of the Protestants, the sovereign ordered to raze all their places of worship. The one of Saint-Martin will owe its survival only to the ingenuity of the inhabitants, who will build a bell tower to transform the building into a church.

During the French Revolution, the building was transformed for a time into a Temple of Reason, then into a granary! This is how the building survived until today. It is besides classified as a historical monument since 1963!

- A copy of the Montbéliard altarpiece, a work describing the life of Jesus Christ. The original is currently in Vienna.
